Wedding Fireworks FAQs

Fireworks are one of the most spectacular and memorable ways to end your wedding! Your guests will absolutely love to witness a magical fireworks display at the end of the reception and your photographer should be able to capture some incredible images of this wonderful experience.

If you’d like a firework display at your wedding, first ensure that your chosen wedding venue will permit you to have one. If you have been granted permission, then start speaking to firework specialists to ensure availability for the evening of your wedding. You may be offered a variety of different packages so be sure to choose the package that suits your wedding budget – and always have a wet weather plan arranged with your chosen firework company just in case you’re unlucky with rain on your wedding day.

Venues that don’t allow fireworks might be happy to work on an alternative with you, such as a sparkler send-off or an indoor lights display. But if you have your heart set on wedding fireworks, then you’ll need to choose your venue carefully.

The perfect season for fireworks requires a bit of planning. Autumn and winter are best when the sky is at its darkest so they stand out, but these are also the chilliest times of the year. If you’re encouraging all your guests to stand outside to watch the show, you should think about what you can do to make the whole experience the best it can be. What about having blankets for all your guests to wrap themselves in and serving glasses of a hot cocktail, mulled wine or spiked hot chocolate for them to drink while ooh-ing and aah-ing?

How Much Do Fireworks Cost for a Wedding?

The cost of wedding fireworks will depend on the length of the show, the number of special fireworks used, if it’s set to music and lights, and how many firing stations there are (the more firing stations, the more staff needed to set off the fireworks).

You’re looking at around £750-£850 for a six minute display and then £100+ for each additional minute, plus additional costs if the display is set to music or needs multiple firing stations. A big 20 minute display set to music would probably cost £4,000 - £6,000.

Don’t forget to take into account the fact the company will need to do a site survey (to see the height of trees and assess vantage points, etc.), plus they’ll be more expensive on popular nights such as New Year’s Eve.

Can You Do Your Own Fireworks Display at a Wedding?

It is possible to DIY a fireworks show at some venues, but it isn’t recommended and most venues wouldn’t allow it. It can be very dangerous and there are some fireworks that can only be used by professionals.

Here are some of the basic fireworks rules and you’ll see that it makes much more sense to choose a licensed fireworks company who’ll have insurance and lots of experience: fireworks can only be bought be adults over the age of 18 and cannot be set off between 11pm and 7am. Adults can only buy category 2 and 3 fireworks, and only professionals can use category 4. You cannot set off fireworks and sparklers in the street or other public places, otherwise you risk a fine and imprisonment.

In our opinion, leave it to the professionals!
